PH is considering the direct importation of raw rice from Cambodia.

According to Go Negosyo founder Joey Concepcion, Cambodian companies are advised to directly export their country’s rice paddy to the Philippines and process it there in order to increase trade and investment between the two Southeast Asian nations.

Concepcion, the chair of the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ABAC), suggested that rice exports from Cambodia might be significant.

However, Vietnam receives raw Cambodian rice crops and processes them there before exporting them to other nations like the Philippines.

In the Laging Handa public briefing, he stated, “So, akala natin itong mga rice na dumarating dito ay talagang grown and exported from Vietnam pero iyon ay galing sa Cambodia and they processed it with Vietnam.” We believe that the rice that enters this country is farmed and exported from Vietnam.

Concepcion stated that the Philippine business group spoke with their Cambodian counterparts about exploring the potential in the country’s rice industry, including direct exports of rice paddy and investments in processing facilities, during the ASEAN Summit in Phnom Penh last week.

“So, one of our suggestions to the Cambodian businessmen is that perhaps there is an opportunity for the Philippines to process it. If that is the case, then, if you’re able to help us, at that point, there may be some negotiators who can help us find a rice processing plant; in that case, there is likely to be some positive movement on the part of the Cambodian delegation. As a result, what they can do is direct us, and there are local businesspeople who can set up these rice processing facilities; it appears that the Cambodian delegation is positive about this), “Added he.

Vietnam supplied 2.46 million metric tons, or 82%, of the nation’s rice imports from January to September of this year, according to the Bureau of Plant Industry.

According to Asian Development Bank (ADB) data, Cambodia’s paddy production climbed from 8 million tons in 2012 to 10.9 million tons in 2020.

According to the ADB, Cambodia also has extra rice that might be sold on the international market.

In order to assure consistency in the quality of rice exports, Cambodia ships its unprocessed rice paddy to Thailand or Vietnam. These countries also have large storage facilities and extensive distribution networks.
