To prevent the invasion of African swine disease, only hogs, pork, and byproducts from the provinces of the bordering Negros Occidental and Region 7 (Central Visayas) are permitted in Negros Oriental (ASF).

In an interview with the Philippine News Agency on Tuesday, the quarantine officer of the local Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI), Dr. Alfonso Tundag, stated that all other areas, with the exception of the province of Negros Occidental, are prohibited from transporting live pigs, raw and processed meat, and byproducts.

He explained in a combination of English and Cebuano that Negros Occidental, which borders Negros Oriental, is still free of the disease but has increased its surveillance because it is a part of the Western Visayas and Iloilo has reported possible instances.

But before they may be brought to Negros Oriental, these animals and by-products from Negros Occidental must have complete paperwork, he noted.

According to Tundag, Governor Roel Degamo recently signed Executive Order No. 40, which imposes severe controls on the movement of pigs and byproducts into and out of the province and prohibits imports from other areas.

In the absence of the necessary papers, officials on Monday forbade the movement of a piglet from Mabinay town in Negros Oriental to Cebu province, according to the quarantine officer.

Due to the impending Christmas season, only one brand of ham is permitted in Negros Oriental, with the other brands being strictly forbidden.

Virginia Foods, Inc., situated in the adjacent province of Cebu, produces Virginia hams and other comparable processed and canned foods.

Tundag emphasized that in order to be shipped to Negros Oriental, pigs, pork meat, and by-products from the Central Visayas provinces of Cebu, Bohol, and Siquijor must be accompanied by the appropriate documentation.
