Cases of typhoid illness are increasing in Negros Oriental
A health official said on Friday that the number of typhoid fever cases in the province of Negros Oriental is still increasing, with the most recent data showing a 131 percent increase in comparison to last year.
Dr. Liland Estacion, the assistant provincial health officer, told the Philippine News Agency that according to the most recent data collected on the ground, the province recorded 383 cases between January 1 and November 12 with four fatalities.
Negros Oriental had only 166 cases over the same time period the previous year, with no deaths.
Guihulngan City reported two fatalities during the year, and this city and Bayawan City both reported one.
According to Estacion, the rainy season and potential water contamination in impacted areas are the main causes of the increase in typhoid fever infections.
She urged the populace once more to boil water before drinking it and to make sure their food was wholesome.
