On Thursday, Google disclosed that it had appealed the €4.1 billion ($4.3 billion) fine associated with its Android operating system to the EU’s highest court.

In light of the EU’s concerns that Android limits consumer choice and competition in the mobile market, the US-based tech company stated that “there are areas that require legal clarity from the European Court of Justice.”

Google stated in a statement that “Android has provided more choice for everyone, not less,” and that it “supports thousands of successful businesses in Europe and around the world.”

The original sentence of €4.34 billion ($4.55 billion), the largest ever imposed by the European Commission, was reduced when the corporation filed an appeal with the General Court of the European Court of Justice.

Three antitrust proceedings by the European Commission against Google between 2017 and 2019 totaled more than €9 billion ($9.44 billion), including record penalties.

Google asserts that its Android operating system cleared the path for less expensive mobile devices and applications, even as the 27-nation bloc attempts to restrict the reach of tech titans.
