Suppose it is determined scientifically to be advantageous and safe for the age range. In that case, the Department of Health (DOH) is ready to administer Covid-19 immunization to children under five.

DOH officer-in-charge Maria Rosario Vergeire stated during a media session that they are prepared to administer Covid-19 vaccinations to children as early as six months old once FDA and Health Technology Assessment Council regulatory clearance is obtained.

“We are prepared to provide these vaccinations and we have healthcare staff who have been trained for the longest period on vaccinating our children,” she said. “We are willing and we are going to do that.”

The bivalent Covid-19 vaccines manufactured by Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech had their emergency use authorizations (EUAs) for use in children as young as six months old modified by the US FDA on Thursday.

Vergeire pointed out that only Sinovac has submitted an application for EUA thus far.

However, she added, “hearing that it has been given EUA in the US, perhaps Pfizer and Moderna will soon apply with our Food and Drug Administration. However, at the moment, there is none, and we are presently reviewing Sinovac for children under the age of five.

So, “let’s just wait, because the EUA also triggers for our experts to evaluate further because it shows for whom, what must be given, and other indications,” she continued. “Therefore, antayin lang natin, kasi ‘yung EUA also triggers for our experts to evaluate further due to the fact that dun sa EUA dun natin nakikita kung para sa kanino, ano pa

From December 5 to 7, the DOH carried out the Bakunahang Bayan, giving primary series vaccinations to 33,239 children aged 5 to 11 and first booster doses to 132,770 people statewide.

The percentage of children between the ages of 5 and 11 who have received our Covid-19 vaccine on its whole is currently close to 50%. It represents 49.3% of the target population in the age above category, according to Vergeire.
