Solon desires that Arabic be taught in all primary institutions.
On Sunday, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian campaigned for Arabic language instruction and Islamic Values Education (ALIVE) to be part of the curriculum at all public and private elementary schools outside of Muslim Mindanao’s Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (BARMM).
In order to give Muslim Filipino students proper and relevant educational opportunities while honoring their culture, including the teaching of the Arabic Language and Islamic Values, Gatchalian introduced Senate Bill No. 382 earlier this year.
He continued by saying that the proposed action would also assure Muslim Filipinos’ participation in national aims and aspirations that would make them partners in nation-building.
The measure, in Gatchalian’s opinion, will help to promote inclusive education, which will address and respond to the variety of needs of students and ensure full participation, presence, and achievement in learning cultures and communities. Gatchalian is the chair of the Senate Committee on Basic Education.
The proposed law calls for both Muslim and non-Muslim Filipino students to get instruction in Arabic language and Islamic values.
Additionally, the measure calls for the distribution of pertinent textbooks and educational resources as well as the development of the skills of asatidz, or instructors, in the majority of Muslim Filipino communities.
It also aims to offer DepEd-accredited or recognized madaris, which are privately run, community-based educational institutions with a primary focus on Islamic studies and Arabic literacy, technical and financial support for their educational endeavors. Arabic is the language of instruction in madaris.
“Isinusulong natin ang mas pinaigting na mga programa sa ilalim ng Arabic Language and Values Education, bilang pagkilala sa kultura at mga kontribusyon ng ating mga kababayan at mga mag-aaral na Muslim. In honor of the culture and contributions of our Muslim compatriots and students, we are pushing more intensive programs under the Arabic Language and Values Education. Bahagi rin ito ng ating pagsisikap upang matiyak na pagdating sa dekalidad na edukasyon. This contributes to our efforts to ensure that our Muslim students are not left behind when it comes to receiving a high-quality education, Gatchalian said.
The proposed measure also includes students participating in the Alternative Learning System in addition to those attending public schools and private madaris across the nation outside of BARMM.
