PH is required to assert its rights over WPS: Solon

Senator Loren Legarda stated on Monday that the national government must reaffirm the Permanent Court of Arbitration’s 2016 Hague decision and declare China’s broad maritime claims without foundation.

Legarda declared that it is the responsibility of the following generation of Filipinos to ensure that the Hague ruling is effectively implemented after a Senate resolution, which is still unnumbered, denounced the ongoing invasion of the nation’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and claimed territory in the South China Sea.

A Chinese warship of the Philippine Navy was “bullied” in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) in November, according to the resolution submitted on December 14.

The 2016 arbitral decision upheld the Philippines’ claims to the territory within its Exclusive Economic Zone.

How else can we support the Filipino Navy, fishermen in Palawan and other coastal regions, and Filipinos both now and in the future? Legarda stated in a press statement.

In addition to establishing territorial defense in the WPS against Chinese vessel encroachment and harassment, the Philippines should safeguard and maintain marine biodiversity.

Legarda argued that organizations like the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) needed to step up their presence there.

“The budget was recently approved. We don’t need to wait to make changes to the 2024 budget. Perhaps they (BFAR) can set aside money for Kalayaan from their budget for fishing boats “She spoke.

Numerous fisherfolk, notably those from the Ilocos Region, Central Luzon, Mimaropa, and portions of the National Capital Region, benefit from the WPS, according to BFAR Director Eduardo Gongona.

According to him, the WPS received 324,312 metric tons of aquatic products in 2020, equivalent to 7% of the overall fisheries production for that year.

The retrieval of space debris that had fallen within the territorial waters near Pag-Asa Island in November was hampered by interference from the Chinese Coast Guard (CCG).

Following the earlier discovery of space debris within the nation’s territorial waters by Philippine personnel.

An attempt was made to retrieve the space debris, however, a CCG boat purposefully intervened and cut the towing cable to take it forcibly.

In an ongoing endeavor to assert Philippine sovereignty over claimed territorial waters, the Department of Foreign Affairs sent a note verbale to China and formally lodged a diplomatic protest.
