The young farmer brings “pakbet” vegetables to children.

Marvin Xavier Vea, 24, of Solsona, Ilocos Norte, had an idea after observing that fertilizer-grown produce is chosen at the public market while organic lowland vegetables are rejected.

Vea had the idea to turn them into “pinakbet crackers” that kids could eat as an alternative and healthy snack rather than throwing them away for composting or using them as animal feed.

The most cutting-edge agri-based emergency food reserve or food nutrition security product, Vea’s pakbet crackers, which contain natural components including flour, eggplant, okra, squash, string beans, bitter gourd, onions, tomato, ginger, egg, salt, and flavoring, has been named the winner.

The Ilocos Norte government’s provincial Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Office (MSMEO) spearheaded the search, which was available to any businesspeople, including students, who were at least 18 years old.

Elma Gabriel, the director of MSMEO, stated on Monday that the competition intended to make the best use of the province’s resources with a potential market both domestically and internationally.

Vea, who was up in a farming family in the outlying Bagbago hamlet, claimed he merely wanted a “consolation” award but ultimately won the competition against 30 other qualified entries and took home the PHP30,000 cash prize.

Vea intends to include his pakbet crackers in the line-up of food items offered for sale at their family-run farm and catered to schoolchildren who are not particularly keen on eating vegetables.

The Philippine News Agency quoted Vea as saying, “Our target consumers would be the pre-schoolers and those in the primary including those affected by calamities including our local tourists and visitors.”

Vea stated that its pakbet crackers will soon be available in the local market at an introductory price of PHP80 per pack, with an investment of PHP44,800 and operating expenses of PHP214,460.

4,000 packs are created each month as part of our production expansion, he continued.

The Mariano Marcos State University, the Department of Trade and Industry, and the MSMEO continue to provide assistance to entrepreneurs through a mentoring program to help them further enhance their goods in support of the most creative and promising local businesspeople in the province.
