Cebu City promises to take action to reduce animal abuse

Animals in this country are guaranteed protection through steps that the Cebu City Council will pass to end occurrences of animal cruelty, despite the fact that they may not have a voice in society.

The Animal Welfare Act of 1998 will soon be fully implemented, according to Vice Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia, who also serves as the chair of the city’s Animal Welfare Committee.

A local government unit’s (LGU) treatment of its animals will reflect how it treats its residents. So, how you treat your animals is what counts, Garcia said on the “Openline” forum moderated by Erik Espina.

He claimed that the action was a result of the nation’s first-ever LGU-hosted animal welfare summit, which took place on December 13–14 and featured speakers from the Humane Society International, the Animal Kingdom Foundation, the Bureau of Animal Industry, and the University of the Philippines–Los Banos.

The summit, which was held in SM City Cebu and attended by over 200 people, covered methods to end animal abuse.

“I am delighted that so many individuals are exhibiting interest in animal welfare. There are so many sensitive organizations and foundations here that try to promote animal care, according to Garcia.

He said that the committee was successful in forging connections with the Philippine National Police, the barangays, and a number of animal welfare groups in order to work for the distribution of information on the public policy against animal cruelty.

After a stray dog named “Bon-Bon” was saved by private citizens last month with the aid of staff from the hinterland Barangay Bonbon, who discovered the animal walking with a knife embedded in its head, the city made measures to improve its campaign against animal cruelty.

The dog underwent surgery in a private veterinary clinic and is now recovering well. Photos of the dog quickly spread over social media.

When the police have enough evidence to make a strong case against the person who stabbed the dog, Garcia said his office will issue a statement.
