PCUP plans to expand its urban poor livelihood initiatives in 2023.
On Thursday, the Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor (PCUP) unveiled its strategy for expanding the number of urban poor people’s means of subsistence in 2023.
In order to strengthen the urban poor neighborhoods, PCUP chairwoman Undersecretary Elpidio Jordan Jr. stressed the need to fight for more livelihood projects.
Jordan added, “This is the surest way for us to assist and be successful in our beloved President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Romualdez Marcos Jr.’s endeavors to lessen the suffering of our underprivileged people.
Jordan argued that programs for sustainable livelihood for the poor should be included in government services provided to the nation’s marginalized and impoverished groups.
In order to advance the welfare and interests of each and every low-income Filipino home, he added responsible government agencies must cooperate.
Approximately 429 recipients from 16 Sustainable Livelihood Program Associations received a total of PHP6.435 million at the ceremonial pay-out that took place at the Barangay Opao Gym in Mandaue City, Cebu, in November.
The winners went through a painstaking process laid out by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), according to PCUP Visayas area coordinator Julito Layon, and qualified after meeting the requirements for the distribution of startup funds.
The DSWD’s livelihood aid would act as start-up money for the beneficiaries’ chosen businesses.
The PCUP has committed to implementing programs that will assist the Marcos administration in achieving its objective of reducing poverty to a single-digit rate by 2028.
The PCUP, a 1986 Office of the President creation, is tasked with advancing and defending the legal rights of informal settler families and other urban poor organizations and communities.
The PCUP acts as the urban poor’s direct conduit to the government when it comes to the creation of programs and policies that are tailored to their needs.
The commission especially reacts to urban poverty concerns, such as evictions, land reclamation, and housing, and helps the needy.
