Manila: On Monday, the House of Representatives passed a bill establishing archipelagic sea lanes (ASLs)…

Major roads may get additional motorbike lanes.

In order to reduce crashes involving motorcycles, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced on Wednesday that it is considering adding more motorcycle lanes to Metro Manila’s main thoroughfares before the end of the year.
MMDA deputy chairperson Frisco San Juan Jr. highlighted the accomplishment of creating a dedicated motorcycle lane along Commonwealth Avenue in a press release.
According to San Juan, the organization will investigate the possibilities of implementing the plan as a traffic control solution on the city’s main thoroughfares.
“(We are researching the [construction of] motorcycle lanes due to their success along Commonwealth Avenue.) Ang motorcycle lane, pinag-aaralan natin, ay maaari pong gawin na rin, pag-aralan ang pagsasagawa nito sa iba’t ibang main highways din po dito sa ating Kamaynilaan. This plan might be examined and put into effect on several important roadways in Metro Manila “added he.
To prevent traffic accidents, the mayors of Metro Manila agreed in principle in October to create a dedicated motorcycle lane on Commonwealth Avenue.
The rightmost outermost lane of Commonwealth Avenue will be established as a dedicated bicycle lane under MMDA Resolution No. 22-15.
The second and third lanes of the same avenue will be reserved exclusively for motorcycle lanes and public utility vehicle lanes (for buses, UV Express, and jeeps, respectively).
All other motor vehicles will go on Commonwealth Avenue’s remaining lanes.
Rider Party List No. 1 Rep. Ramon Rodrigo Gutierrez underlined the significance of providing riders with separate lanes because they are one of the most exposed and dangerous road users.
According to data from the MMDA Traffic Engineering Center’s Road Crash Statistics, there were 1,010 motorcycle-related crashes on Commonwealth Avenue between January and August of 2022.
The data also revealed that 444 of the 1,010 occurrences resulted in property damage, while 557 of the cases were non-fatal and nine of them were fatal.
