The Bureau of Customs (BOC), in addition to reporting a surplus in income for the year, has captured illegal drugs and smuggled items, including agricultural products valued at PHP23.582 billion, between January 1 and December 22, 2022.

Since January 2022, agricultural products worth an estimated PHP1.226 billion have been detained.

This year, the BOC also reported 107 drug bust operations that netted more than PHP11.953 billion in illicit drug seizures.

Due to this, 33 people have so far been detained and handed over to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA).

Meanwhile, Commissioner Yogi Filemon Ruiz revealed that as distribution across various BOC ports continues, 5,049 of the 6,972 total balikbayan boxes have been delivered while 1,923 remain unclaimed.

The BOC brought 105 criminal cases before the DOJ from January 1 to December 22 against shady importers and customs brokers for breaking customs laws, rules, and regulations.

Similarly to this, the Professional Regulation Commission received around 21 administrative cases against bad customs brokers.

Additionally, it terminated the licenses of 298 importers and 106 customs brokers when it was discovered that they had broken the terms of Republic Act No. 10863, popularly known as the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA).

increased anti-corruption initiatives

Approximately 77 show-cause orders were issued between January 1 and December 22, which resulted in the dismissal, suspension, relief, and reorganization of errant BOC employees.

The BOC-Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service have conducted 498 personnel investigations within the same time period, and as a result, nine administrative matters have been brought before the BOC-Legal Service.

Due to irregular and illegal acts, 410 BOC employees were reshuffled or relocated to different offices and ports over the period, nine employees were suspended, six were reprimanded, 35 were relieved, and three employees were terminated.
