According to the Department of Education (DepEd), the anticipated cost of rebuilding schools across the nation devastated by recent flooding and severe rains has now reached PHP409 million.

DepEd spokesperson Michael Poa stated in a Viber message that 42 schools had infrastructure damage.

The Zamboanga Peninsula has one school, Northern Mindanao has 30 schools, and the Caraga Region has 11 schools.

Some schools in Misamis Occidental have also been impacted by the inclement weather, according to the DepEd-Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.

Due to the strong rains produced by the shear line and low-pressure area, several tables and chairs were left strewn in muck after the flood.

Poa, in the meantime, committed to helping these schools by intervening in disasters.

We will offer temporary learning spaces for the schools that are not safe to operate because of structural damage, he told the Philippine News Agency.

In addition, he stated that the temporary use of alternative distribution methods for students will be made in schools that are impacted by the suspension of in-person sessions.

Seven schools are currently being used as evacuation centers in Oroquieta City, Surigao del Norte, and Siargao.
