Resuming the “Etag” festival in Sagada will increase visitor numbers

After a two-year absence, the municipality of Sagada will once more host the Etag Festival in February as an additional tourist draw.

“From February 2 to 5, the annual Sagada Etag Festival is scheduled to be celebrated in a full blast following a two-year decline. Along with the institutional activities we used to have, we will also be introducing the Sagada tourist catchphrase, said Mayor Felicito Dula in a phone interview on Thursday.

According to Dula, the majority of the population work in the tourism sector, which is a significant contributor to the town’s economy.

According to earlier statements made by town officials, over 1,300 people work as tour guides, and there are 300 hotels and restaurants functioning in Sagada’s central business sector.

Additionally, there are about 100 gift businesses that employ locals.

Once arrivals start to increase, according to Dula, the municipality is anticipated to generate an average of PHP 10 million annually from tourism.

He continued, “We have completely opened our borders without any conditions, and we will have the Etag festival again this year for tourists to enjoy.

The Igorot traditionally uses “etag” to preserve wild pig meat in preparation for the upcoming rainy season.

Due to the villagers’ observed smoking process, Sagada’s etag is black. In addition to being spiced with soy sauce and topped with onion bulb slices and onion leeks, charred chicken is a frequent cooking method for the traditional “pinikpikan.”

“Strong culture and faith is the foundation and progress of the community,” is the subject of this year’s festival, which is held every Wednesday and Friday.

A municipal procession, activities related to the feast of the purification of the blessed virgin Mary and the presentation of the Lord Jesus Christ will all be included in the agro-gastro fair, which will once again highlight the ETag as a delicacy.

There will also be a cultural day with traditional games and other cultural pursuits.

Dula added that the launch of the “Southern Sagada natural treat, tour, and adventure” will showcase a different side of Sagada by enabling visitors to previously off-limits locations.

The Obwa Canyon waterfalls, Takkong traditional burial grounds, Balangagan cave, and the dawn over the Pinumdeng skyline are just a few of the attractions in southern Sagada.

Dula claimed that because their town was off-limits to visitors during the pandemic, the natural beauty of the popular tourist destinations also saw a renewal.

“We are recovering slowly, and we hope that the festival will further boost the number of tourists visiting our town,” he continued, “so that the losses incurred by the people will also be recouped.”
