PNP “identifies” the author of the fake complete alert memo
The bogus memorandum that appeared to be announcing a full alert status to thwart an alleged Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) destabilization plot was shared on social media, according to the Philippine National Police (PNP), who on Tuesday claimed to have already identified the sources.
Col. Jean Fajardo, a PNP spokesperson, stated in a television interview that this was based on the findings of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group and the Anti-Cybercrime Group (CIDG).
“I am not free to disclose itong mga initial findings nila, but tuloy tuloy yung ating imbestigasyon pati na rin yung mga lumabas na mga papel na unsigned,” the researcher said. I’m not allowed to share their first conclusions, but our inquiry is ongoing, as are the papers that emerged that weren’t signed. Yung mga worried na cops at napangalanan at nakalagay na mga pangalan doon sa dokumento ay pinag-explain. Fajardo stated that the concerned officers, whose names are listed in the paper, have been asked to provide an explanation.
In an earlier statement, PNP-ACG spokesperson Lt. Michelle Sabino cautioned that those responsible for spreading this false information will face charges and said that they are looking into the source of the memorandum.
The unsigned papers are also being investigated by the ACG, and police officers whose names were stated or featured on the documents have been contacted for comment.
Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr., head of the PNP, launched a probe into potential errors in the memo’s distribution on Monday.
At the military’s headquarters in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City, on Saturday, during the handover of command between the new AFP leader Gen. Andres Centino and the outgoing chief Lt. Gen. Bartolome Vicente Bacarro, rumors of the destabilization plot began to circulate.
All PNP units are to be placed on high alert as a result of “growing issues in Camp Aguinaldo,” “resignation of all staff in DND (Department of National Defense),” and “destabilization movements from the AFP,” according to the letter that was circulated.
Col. Medel Aguilar, a spokesman for the AFP, however, shot off the rumors and declared that the change of leadership went “smoothly.”
