The mayor of Cebu said on Tuesday that the municipal government is confident in completing construction at the new site of the Sinulog Grand Parade before schedule.

This is in defiance of recommendations from several officials, including Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, who stated that the Fiesta Senior this year might not be the ideal moment to switch the location from the one used for prior celebrations.

In a break from the traditional location at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC), which is situated in the midtown neighborhood, Mayor Michael Rama stated that they are committed to staging the festival at the new business sector in the South Road Properties (SRP).

Before the weekend, he claimed, construction would be completed on the observation area, stage, waiting for space for contingents, command post, and grandstand for onlookers of the Sinulog dancers’ carousel path.

Only the grand procession of the major events will take place in the SRP, which is now thought of as the city’s new commercial sector, as the Sinulog Foundation Inc. (SFI) elected to continue holding other events at the CCSC.

The award ceremony for the Sinulog 2023 dancing competition will take place on Monday at the customary location, while the Sinulog Festival Queen will take place on Friday at the sports center.

The ritual performance of the winners’ showdown and Sinulog sa Kabataan last Sunday took place at the sports center.

The asphalting of the pavement surrounding the grandstand is expected to be completed by Wednesday, according to Councilor Jerry Guardo, chair of the City Council’s committee on infrastructure, which is in charge of overseeing the physical work for the SRP preparations.

The large stage for the event was being built by the construction company Dakay Construction, and the concrete slabs were put up on Tuesday.

According to Guardo, the municipal government is monitoring the progress of the ongoing asphalting of the pavement at the diversion route leading from the back of SM Seaside Mall to the grandstand, where the Sinulog presentation will take place.

To ensure that the road leading to the grandstand wouldn’t be muddy, he continued, “Our crew from the Department of Engineering and Public Works is working double time even on the weekend to complete the road concreting project.”

The ongoing preparations for the grand parade and traditional showdown of Sinulog dance performers on Sunday were inspected by officials and SFI executives on Tuesday.

Tuesday afternoon, Garcia stated in a press conference that Cebu City officials ought to have sought “the position of the Province of Cebu” about the location shift for this year’s Sinulog grand parade.

Garcia would lead a group from the province in an annual performance of the Sinulog dance before the pandemic.

Because of the One Cebu Island (idea), it would be excellent if the selection of the venue also took the Province of Cebu and the other cities other than Cebu City into consideration.

According to Garcia, the province is “actively participating this year, not just in terms of contingents but also in terms of aiding the City of Cebu with financial support and we have urged local government entities to join the Sinulog.”

This year, the province will send at least eight contingents to Sinulog.
