Faustino “not kept in the dark” about AFP leadership shift

On Tuesday, Malacanang said that departed Department of National Defense officer-in-charge Jose Faustino Jr. was aware of the change in command in the Philippine Armed Forces (AFP).

Cheloy Garafil, the secretary of the Presidential Communications Office (PCO), responded to Faustino’s claim that he just learned of Gen. Andres Centino’s oath of office in Malacanang “through news and social media sources.”

Garafil stated in a news release that former DND OIC Jose Faustino Jr. was aware of the developments regarding the nomination of Gen. Andres Centino, who is the only 4-star general in the AFP, according to Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin.

As Commander-in-Chief, the President, according to her, has “the exclusive right to designate the AFP chief of staff.”

On January 6, Marcos reappointed Centino as the AFP’s chief of staff. Previously, from November 12, 2021, to August 8, 2022, he was the AFP’s chief of staff.

In February, Centino will leave the company.

In August of last year, he replaced Centino as head of the AFP by appointing Lt. Gen. Bartolome Bacarro.

Along with replacing Faustino as DND Secretary, Carlito Galvez Jr., the president’s advisor on peace, reconciliation, and unity, was also nominated by Marcos.
