A technology being developed by the Department of Science and Technology in Central Luzon (DOST-3) can precisely estimate rice yields.

Accurately forecasting rice yields, according to Dr. Amy Lizbeth Rico, a professor at the Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU) in Camiling town, Tarlac province, “allows the government to plan the production, distribution, and consumption of food more effectively, combat food insecurity, and prepare for shortages and supply shocks well in advance.”

Rico is the project manager for the Satellite Imagery Crop Monitoring and Forecasting Systems for Agricultural Technology (SICAT) project, a research study that is being sponsored by DOST under its Regional Grants-in-Aid program (DOST3 – RGIA).

Since the country has experienced both a quick increase in population and a change in climate, she emphasized the significance of accurate rice yield prediction with a specific field to calculate the harvest by region.

She claimed that yield forecasting is possible through Project SICAT, a rice crop advisory system created by TAU, and that relevant warnings can be given in accordance with the results.

In order to provide accurate and exact predictions, Rico added that project researchers are now confirming satellite photos of rice development and establishing phenological traits and algorithms for rice growth and production.

She also stated that efforts are being made to disseminate information among target users in Tarlac, including farmer groups and agricultural technicians, in order to guarantee the technology’s eventual smooth adoption.

By October of this year, the project is anticipated to be finished.
