This year, Caraga Region will plant 1 million Moringa seedlings.

A memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the implementation of the “One Million Malunggay Plant Growing Advocacy Project” has been signed by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in the Caraga Region (DENR-13).

The signing took place on Friday at the Caraga State University’s Hero Auditorium in Butuan City, under the direction of CHED-13 director Dr. George Colorado and DENR-13 executive director Nonito Tamayo.

In a Saturday interview, Tamayo stated that the project would include state universities and colleges (SUCs).

According to Tamayo, DENR-13 will connect the SUCs to its National Greening Program (NGP), specifically to the 123 associations in the area covered by the Community-Based Forest Management Agreement (CBFM).

For its NGP project, DENR-13 has set a target area of 1,200 hectares.

The initiative is expected to start in February, according to him. “The CHED and the SUCs here will offer the seeds and seedlings of malunggay trees that will be propagated in the 17 nurseries of the DENR placed in different provinces,” he said.

The 123 associations covered by the CBFM will get the developed malunggay (Moringa oleifera) seedlings for planting and harvesting.

In our NGP regions in the area, Tamayo remarked, “We will intercrop the malunggay trees with the diverse species of trees.” Our CBFM associations can make some money from malunggay, a marketable agricultural commodity.

Malunggay leaves might also be given to schools that run food programs, he suggested.

“In terms of potassium and vitamin C, malunggay is more potent. The malunggay leaves are healthy for our kids, according to Tamayo.

The ceremonial planting of 50 malunggay trees at the CHED premises in March of last year marked the start of project planning.

The Marunggay Festival was established in June 2021 in Laoag, Ilocos Norte, where it is known as marunggay, to promote it as a superfood due to its potential nutritional components.

The National Nutrition Council led the planting of one million malunggay trees in the Eastern Visayas in 2021.

Fast-growing malunggay trees require minimal maintenance other from keeping the soil moist and pruning the branches to promote fruiting. They should be in a sunny area and flourish in tropical or subtropical climates.
