IPs in Pangasinan are registered with Comelec through satellite.
In this town’s Barangay Malico, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has registered a total of 30 indigenous people (IP) voters as part of a unique satellite voter registration program.
The region-wide simultaneous special satellite registration held on January 14 was intended for the vulnerable sector, most specifically the IPs in the hamlet, according to Gina Aquino, the San Nicolas town election officer.
“This was the second time we had registered special voters in the neighborhood who were IP members. The first one was held in July of last year, he said.
At least seven candidates have registered, five of whom are requesting transfers, and two are requesting entry corrections.
During their initial satellite registration in Barangay Malico in July of last year, 23 IPs were registered.
Aquino claimed that despite the size, they had succeeded in their goal of delivering Comelec services to the most vulnerable areas given the distance between the remote village and the town itself, which was situated in a hilly area near the border of the provinces of Pangasinan and Nueva Vizcaya.
“We’ve come back for them because we think the election should be inclusive and have a larger turnout. We wanted the Comelec services to be available to them given the barangay’s location, she said.
She said that the transportation had been provided by the local government body.
Aquino stated that towns, schools, and vulnerable groups including senior persons, women, young people, and IPs are all included in the satellite registration program.
Jaime Segundo, the barangay captain of Malico, commended the Comelec for organizing the event in a separate interview.
When registering online, he noted, “our constituents were able to save money and time coming to the town proper.”
