8 Eastern Visayas towns proclaim a state of calamity

The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council stated on Monday that at least eight local government units (LGUs) in Eastern Visayas had declared a state of disaster as a result of the severe flooding brought on by a low-pressure area (LPA) and the northeast monsoon last week.

These include Catubig in Northern Samar, San Miguel and Santa Fe in Leyte, the Eastern Samar province, Calbayog City, Gandara, Basey, and San Jorge in Samar.

According to the eight LGUs, numerous localities have been inundated, and a sizable number of crops have suffered damage.

The calamity fund might be used to assist impacted residents if a state of calamity was declared. Additionally, it would regulate the cost of basic goods in the impacted districts.

Mayor Benjamin Ver of Jipapad, Eastern Samar, has expressed concern about the town’s dwindling catastrophe funds as a result of the flooding that has been occurring there since the third week of December.

Since our local resources have run out, food and water are our most pressing needs, he stated.

In the previous two weeks, the Leyte, Biliran, Southern Leyte, Eastern Samar, and Samar provinces have all received a red rainfall warning from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

When rainfall totals exceed 30 mm (millimeters) in one hour or reach 65 mm over the course of three hours, a red rainfall alert is issued.

Seven persons have died as a result of the intense rain in the provinces of Leyte, Eastern Samar, and Northern Samar.

An LPA and the northeast monsoon’s effects on the weather have had an impact on 778,422 people in the area.

9,237 hectares of rice plantations were damaged by floods, causing damage to the agriculture sector estimated at PHP145.47 million.
