The loading of the first consignment of coconut seed nuts for farmers in the province of Dinagat Islands began on Thursday and is currently underway.

According to Joel Oclarit, manager of the Philippine Coconut Authority in the Caraga Region (PCA-13), “the first shipment will consist of about 40,000 coconut seed nuts and will reach Dinagat Island by the middle of next week.”

The PCA Research Center in Zamboanga City provided the seed nuts, which were made up of Catigan Dwarf kinds that were open to pollination.

“As requested by the provincial government, 200,000 seed nuts will be shipped to the Dinagat Islands. Only 40,000 seed nuts can be transported on the navy ship we are using, according to Oclarit.

He stated that following the initial delivery, their office would request another round to finish the supply of seed nuts.

In the seven towns of the island province, typhoon Odette in December 2021 devastated at least 1.3 million coconut trees, posing a problem for 9,345 coconut producers.

According to Oclarit, the provincial government is responsible for processing the free seed nuts obtained from the PCA Research Center.

The seed nuts “will considerably help,” according to governor Nilo Demerey Jr., the province’s coconut farmers, especially in the quest to improve their impacted way of life.
