‘Out in 30 days’ for DepEd resolution on a P2.4-B laptop purchase

According to the Department of Education (DepEd), the administrative process for the PHP2.4 billion laptop purchase could take more than a month to complete.

DepEd spokesperson Michael Poa said in a Viber message that the timetable might still be altered depending on the parties’ pleadings.

According to the most recent information provided to him, he stated to the Philippine News Agency, “We are expecting a resolution within 20-30 days, subject to additional pleadings or motions that may be filed by the parties.”

Please be patient with us, he said, adding, “As for culpability, let’s simply wait for the resolution.”

According to earlier statements made by the DepEd, the department had already begun its actions and asked the Commission on Probe to conduct a fraud audit into the allegedly “overpriced and outdated laptops” acquisition even before the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee announced its findings.

After about two months of investigation, the Senate committee recommended that five current and former DepEd and PS-DBM officials be charged with perjury in addition to two others with falsifying public records. These recommendations were made against four current and former DepEd officials as well as four others from the Procurement Service – Department of Budget Management (PS-DBM).

It further suggested that PS-DBM be abolished and that the claimed overpricing of at least PHP979 million be recovered together with accrued interest and damages.

Poa insisted that the present government is committed to enhancing the effectiveness and transparency of its procurement procedures when he stated on Thursday that the department will “certainly consider” the recommendation made in the committee report.

Of course, DepEd will always comply if there are proceedings that need to be followed. We will unquestionably assist with the procedure if the DepEd is required to provide documentation, the man stated.

Despite this, according to the DepEd, one of the present officials included in the committee report recommendation is still working on his or her current responsibilities.

She is not currently being placed on precautionary suspension, according to Poa.

As of right now, the DepEd continues to be open to working with other organizations—like the Office of the Ombudsman—to conduct an investigation and enhance its procurement procedures.
