Cash-for-hire fraud deceives 8 “Palace appointees”

Malacanang has issued a warning to the populace about a fraudulent scam that offers official appointments in exchange for money.

According to Cheloy Garafil, secretary of the Presidential Communications Office, eight people had fallen for the appointment fraud when the warning was issued.

The victims, who claimed to be President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s nominees, traveled to Manila’s Malacanang Palace on Friday afternoon to take their purported oaths.

‘After eight ‘presidential appointees’ hurried to the Palace for their alleged oath taking on Friday, Malacanang urged the public not to entertain suspicious individuals interacting with them through correspondence or online,’ Garafil said in a statement.

The alleged positions included an ambassadorial post to the Netherlands, assistant secretary of transportation, board member of the tourism infrastructure and enterprise zone authority, president and CEO of the Clark International Airport Corporation, executive director and vice chairperson of the Early Childhood Care and Development Council, director of Clark Development Corp., and port of Batangas manager.

According to the victims, two individuals from the Office of the Executive Secretaryโ€”and Undersecretary named Eduardo Diokno and an Assistant Secretary named Johnson Seeโ€”instructed them to travel to the Palace for their purported swearing-in ceremonies, Garafil claimed.

Hubert Guevara, a senior deputy executive secretary, disputed that an oath-taking ceremony was set for Friday.

The victims paid “large quantities of money” in exchange for open positions, and in return, they received fraudulent appointment documents and invitations.

Inconsistencies in the information the con artists gave their victims led some victims to express skepticism about the legitimacy of the appointments and oath-taking, but they nevertheless went to Malacanang, according to Garafil.

She claimed that the scam is already being investigated by the National Bureau of Investigation.

According to Garafil, “The Palace pleaded with the victims to assist law enforcement.”
