ASF and pork supply issues plague the province of Iloilo.

Arthur Defensor Jr., the governor of Iloilo, stated on Friday that the province is fighting two wars: one is to stop the spread of African swine fever (ASF), and the other is to guarantee the supply of pig products in the upcoming three months, particularly in areas where depopulation was mandated.

With the addition of Dingle and Barotac Nuevo, 13 municipalities in the province, according to Defensor, are in the red or infected zone.

We now have Dingle and Barotac Viejo as new red zones. The last time, there was a positive case in Barotac Viejo, but it was first noticed if it was merely an incursion because there was only one barangay, he continued.

Oton, San Miguel, Leganes, New Lucena, Alimodian, Santa Barbara, Mina, Barotac Nuevo, Dumangas, Banate, and Janiuay are the other LGUs located in the red zone.

According to information from the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian as of January 26, the virus was found in 78 barangays throughout 18 municipalities in the province.

The municipalities of Zarraga, Batad, San Dionisio, Badiangan, and Dueas have confirmed cases that are categorized as pink or buffer zones. Through risk mitigation strategies like enhanced biosecurity and surveillance, the pink zone aims to stop and manage the spillover of cases from the red area.

The governor did note that because the illness is so widespread, checkpoints and the adoption of biosecurity measures could not guarantee complete protection.

During their meeting with the Provincial Price Monitoring Council two days earlier, they established a standing order to inventory the supply of pork in the province.

Since October, Defensor claimed, pigs have been shipped outside of the province; nevertheless, farmers have been reluctant to produce fresh swine, and no replacement has been made in red zone areas, raising worries about a supply issue.

Environmental monitoring is undertaken to see whether the red zone areas are already clear of illness so that repopulation can begin.
