DA-13 will build a 2.1K-hectare durian farm in Caraga.
2,154 hectares of durian plantations will be developed in the area by the Department of Agriculture in the Caraga Region (DA-13).
The High-Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP) of DA-13 stated on Tuesday that the action is intended to meet and maintain the high demand for fresh durian on the global market, particularly in China.
The HVCDP noted that the Caraga region now has 1,315 hectares set aside for durian production and that identified expansion areas have previously been examined and deemed to be suitable for the cultivation of durian fruits.
The HVCDP stated that the expansion was also in line with the DA’s initiative to increase durian production in the nation in the wake of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s recent official visit to China, where he successfully negotiated a USD2 billion fruit export contract.
The DA-13, through the HVCDP, is also preparing the durian producers in the area in addition to expanding the land area for durian production.
About 50 durian producers in the area are currently completing a three-day training on durian production and marketing potential, according to Emmylou Presilda, DA-13 information officer.
The Agricultural Training Institute in the Caraga Region is leading the training, which got underway on Monday, with assistance from the Bureau of Plant Industry.
According to Presilda, “the training seeks to equip our durian producers, including the agriculture technicians on durian production practices as well as in the nursery management.”
She added that local durian growers would also learn the best agricultural methods and procedures for exporting durian fruits.
The increased demand for durian on the global market was verified in the same statement on Tuesday by Emmanuel Belviz, president of the Durian Industry Association of Davao City, who also supported the training of the region’s durian growers.
According to Belviz, “the durian business is predicted to experience global trade growth as a result of the increased demand for the fruit, which is anticipated to reach USD28 billion by 2025.
According to the HVCDP, the agency will launch its expansion campaign in the Caraga Region at the beginning of the year.
