The Ilocos Norte sand dunes will serve as the backdrop for the local government’s inaugural running event on February 25, which it announced on Friday.

The Laoag City Sand Dunes Challenge, with 5K and 10K category running competitions along the La Paz sand dunes overlooking the West Philippine Sea, will be held, according to Laoag Mayor Michael Keon.

“Yours truly, as everyone knows, is a former runner, therefore I thought it would be a really interesting event if the fun run was held on the picturesque, undulating, and hilly terrains of the Laoag sand dunes, which will be the main draw for this activity, rather than on a standard route. The athletes will also run along the seashores at one point, according to Keon.

Renato Unso, the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association’s training director, had already met with him. Renato Unso would bring the national track team to this city for the running competition as part of the city’s month-long Pamulinawen Festival celebration.

According to the organizers, participants may register for free online or in person at the City Mayor’s Office. After the race, the first 300 registrants will also have the opportunity to go 4×4 riding and sandboarding.

“I urge all athletes to participate in the first Laoag City Sand Dunes Challenge, not just in this city but also in the province and the entire nation, Keon remarked as he oversaw the pre-event ocular inspection of the course.

A free singlet will be provided to registered participants in addition to the 4×4 experience and sandboarding opportunity.
