Brazilian company pledges to support the growth of the PH sugar industry: Marcos

On Monday, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. revealed that a Brazilian company had pledged to support the country’s efforts to expand its ethanol and sugar industries.

The Presidential Communications Operations (PCO) stated in a news release that this follows Marcos’ Monday meeting in Malacanang with representatives from the Brazilian company DATAGRO, the Department of Agriculture (DA), the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA), and members of the Private Sector Advisory Council (PSAC).

The growth of Brazil’s sugar sector is credited to DATAGRO, which bills itself as the world’s largest producer and exporter of sugar and ethanol.

During the discussion, DATAGRO suggested using the DATAGRO Tech Transfer and Assisted Management Project to begin pilot testing in the Negros and Panay Islands.

The PCO stated that “demo plots of 1,000, 5,000, and 10,000 hectares will be built to display current farming processes in accordance with Brazilian standards.”

The Brazilian company also suggested turning sugar in molasses into ethanol in order to diversify sugarcane milling operations.

The cost of importing refined oil would go down, and sugar pollution would be reduced, claims DATAGRO.

In order to achieve sugar sufficiency and play a significant role in the country’s fuel industry, Marcos voiced hope about rising sugarcane yield.

In an interview, Marcos stated, “I’m quite optimistic… that a long-term program to boost production and profitability in the sugar business is doable… in the Philippines.”

He gave the DA and PSAC the assignment of submitting suggestions on how to move the projects—which aim to open the market for energy through the manufacture of ethanol—forward.

He suggested that farmers in the Philippines be shown how to use technology and operations.

“So that they could see that the farm operates, we had to place it close by. If my neighbor can do it, I can do it too, they say. They’ll transfer if you can demonstrate that you can earn more money doing it “said he.

“In a way, that’s what we must do. We must therefore prove it. Here in the Philippines, we have a procedure known as a techno-demo, which is a display of new technology. Thus, the techno-demo will be what we have to conduct “Added he.

Marcos similarly assigned the agriculture department the job of stepping up stakeholder engagement and determining the viability of the projects suggested by DATAGRO.

“For us to know what we need to do on this end, perhaps you can provide us the ideal framework and notion. Let’s discuss how to construct the program. Pag-usapan natin then you must consult with the relevant parties, “said he.
