Phivolcs and PNRI team up to increase research capacity

An official said on Wednesday that the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) and the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) will collaborate to increase volcano research capability.

“The tools are at PNRI. They can operate this equipment, so we need their assistance. We have the know-how and the specialists “Teresito Bacolcol, director of Phivolcs, said to the Philippine News Agency.

These pieces of equipment, according to Raymond Patrick Maximo, Phivolcs Science Research Specialist, include Fourier-transform Infrared Spectrometer, X-ray Fluorescence, Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy, and others.

According to Bacolcol, the PNRI will install equipment to test radon gas on active faults. On the other hand, phivolcs will identify the locations of these active faults.

The relationship, he continued, is crucial since the PNRI investigates potential locations for nuclear power plants.

In the meantime, the two organizations will cooperate on projects in the areas of geochemistry, isotopic methods, volcanism, active faults, geothermal, and volcano-hydrothermal, according to Phivolcs.

“Isotopes can be analyzed using isotopic methods. We want to create techniques for measuring the substance’s isotopes. We shall measure the isotopes in volcanic deposits or rocks in the case of volcanoes “Maximo informed PNA.

He claimed that sulfur isotopes, for instance, can determine whether new magma is contributing to a volcanic eruption.

Phivolcs will offer technical assistance for fieldwork and sample collection as part of the agreement. Additionally, it will make it easier to collect data from nearby sources.

If isotopic techniques are found to be reliable in recognizing the motions of active faults, the Phivolcs will also utilise the project’s output in future operations in addition to working with the PNRI for joint publication of study findings.

On the other hand, the PNRI will work with local residents and politicians to plan the project’s operations. The PNRI will routinely take measurements of radon and thoron to track the motion of active faults.

The PNRI will help partner institutions with mineral chemistry, geochronological, and geochemical analyses, among other things.
