BUTUAN CITY, PHILIPPINES – An official said Monday that work on the PHP325 million Siargao Island Medical Center (SIMC) in Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte, will start shortly.

In an interview with the Philippine News Agency, Surigao del Norte 1st District Rep. Francisco Jose Matugas II said, “The PHP325-million SIMC is a Level 2 hospital as stated in Republic Act (RA) 11500.”

On November 13, 2020, President Rodrigo Duterte signed R.A. 11500.

The Siargao District Hospital in Dapa, Surigao del Norte, was elevated to a Level II General Hospital and its bed capacity was expanded from 50 to 100 as a result of the law.

It also improved the hospital’s professional health care services and facilities, which will serve the people of Surigao del Norte’s nine island municipalities.

“We are now employing extra medical professionals for the SIMC,” Matugas stated.

He also mentioned that the SIMC funding is included in the National Budget for 2022, ensuring that construction on the facility and the procurement of facilities and equipment may begin immediately.

Senator Christopher “Bong” Go, the chair of the Senate’s Committee on Health, and House Speaker Lord Allan Velasco were also recognized by the Siargao congressman for their help in getting the hospital approved.

“The SIMC’s establishment is part of our rehabilitation and recovery effort for Siargao Island following the effects of the pandemic and Typhoon Odette,” Matugas added.
