Bill seeking financial support to expand Centenarian Act

On Thursday, a party-list lawmaker requested that the House Committee on Appropriations support the swift passage of a bill that would provide additional benefits for centenarians in the Philippines.
After his committee, the House Special Committee on Senior Citizen Affairs, approved the bill that will broaden the application of the Centenarian Act or Republic Act 10868, Representative Rodolfo Ordanes of the Senior Citizens Party-list made the decision.
According to the proposed legislation, those who reach the age of 101 will be given cash gifts totaling PHP1 million on their birthdays in addition to a letter of congratulations from the President, according to Ordanes.
Additionally, the bill mandates that every Filipino who turns 80, 85, 90, or 95 years old will receive PHP25,000 in addition to a letter of congratulations from the President.
The current amount given to Filipino centenarians is PHP100,000, in accordance with the law as it stands.
He recalled that the Centenarian Act was passed 7 years ago as a way for the nation to “give back to them as they reach the twilight of their lives” in recognition of the “innumerable contributions” made by senior citizens to the nation.
“Under this law, we provided our senior citizens with a letter of congratulations from our government and an ample cash gift,” he said. “They can use this money to maybe treat their grandchildren to celebrate their century-old tenure on this earth or as a way for them to augment their expenses that have significantly increased due to their old age.”
The principal implementing agency shall be the National Commission of Senior Citizens.
