PBBM plans to digitize the farmer register and the food balance sheet.

On Thursday, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. attempted to enhance the nation’s agriculture sector by accelerating the digitalization of the farmer database and the food balance sheet (FBS).

According to a statement from the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Secretary Cheloy Garafil, this came about when Marcos met with the PSAC’s Agricultural Sector Group at Malacaan Palace in Manila.

As he acknowledged the necessity to modernize the procedures and systems in the agricultural sector, Garafil said Marcos appreciated the PSAC’s proposal to digitize the farmer register and the FBS.

“Everyone needs digitization, therefore if we can implement it as soon as possible, the better. Hence, you must put in place a system that is tailored specifically for agriculture. Hopefully, it will eventually be incorporated into the governance structure, “The PCO cited Marcos as saying to the PSAC’s Agricultural Sector Group.

So far, the national Registration System for Basic Sectors in Agriculture has registered approximately 5.4 million farmers, farm workers, and fishermen (RSBSA).

It is optional to register with RSBSA. It is a prerequisite for using government services related to agri-fisheries, especially those provided by the Department of Agriculture for its programs and projects (DA).

Farmer and fisherfolk profiling, farm parcel georeferencing, and the interventions monitoring system are the three primary parts of the RSBSA.

The FBS, on the other hand, is created by the Philippine Statistical Authority and is an aggregated and analytical data set that gives a thorough picture of a country’s food supply pattern during a specific reference period.

The FBS gives estimates of the amount, calories, protein, and fat content of per capita food that is accessible for human consumption.

According to a Facebook post by state-run Radio Television Malacaang, the PSAC informed Marcos that the country might achieve food security if there is a digital Infrastructure that would encourage openness and ensure data-driven policy decision-making (RTVM).

According to Garafil, who cited the PSAC’s presentation, nations like Kenya and Indonesia currently use digital FBS, which could be put up in 12 weeks.

The digital FBS would incorporate real-time data and speed up transformation in the agriculture sector, the PSAC noted, according to Garafil. The proposed FBS is anticipated to boost small-holder farmers’ incomes and produces substantial budgetary savings for the government.

According to Garafil, the PSAC also advised Marcos, the concurrent head of the DA, to form an FBS Committee made up of representatives from both the public and private sectors.

According to the council, improving storage and logistics along with the FBS will be an efficient way to help the nation achieve its goal of achieving food security in terms of sugar, rice, coconuts, and cattle, she said.

In the interim, Garafil pointed out that the PSAC had also proposed allocating about PHP1.2 billion for the distribution of coconut seedlings.

According to Garafil, Marcos approved with the council’s recommendation.

“Marcos also applauded the PSAC’s advice on replacing coconut trees by dispersing additional seedlings, allocating roughly PHP1.2 billion, and teaching farmers how to grow intercrops to boost productivity,” she added.

The PSAC’s suggestion to utilize common salt as fertilizer for coconuts was also acknowledged by the chief executive because it would increase the predicted yield’s quality and quantity, according to Garafil.

Many business leaders, including the head of the PSAC’s Agricultural Sector Group, Aileen Christel Uygongco-Ongkauko of La Filipina Uy Gongco Corporation, attended the meeting at Malacaan, according to RTVM.
