As the Ukraine war approaches its second year, PH urges for a peaceful conclusion.
On Friday, the Filipino government urged all parties engaged in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine to end it peacefully as the globe marked one year since Russia first attacked the country in eastern Europe.
“On the night of the anniversary, the Philippines voted in favor of a resolution highlighting the need for a “comprehensive, just, and enduring peace in Ukraine,” joining 140 other UN member states.
A total of five UN resolutions defending the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence of Ukraine and other UN members were supported by Manila, according to the reporting body.
In a phone chat earlier this month, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. promised President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine that the Philippines would continue to support and take part in any efforts to find a peaceful solution to the issue.
President Marcos also stated that the Philippines supports Ukraine’s efforts to find peace, according to the statement.
The UN General Assembly reiterated the need to “ensure accountability for the most serious crimes under international law committed in Ukraine through independent national or international investigations and prosecutions to ensure justice for all victims and the prevention of future crimes” this week as its 11th emergency special session got underway.
Recall that in 2022, the UN Security Council decided to give the UNGA permission to conduct the emergency special session after Moscow, a permanent member of the council, vetoed a resolution that would have denounced the invasion.
Over 18 million people, or roughly 40% of the population of Ukraine, are in need of humanitarian aid and protection, according to data from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
The UN OCHA stated that since the start of the conflict, constant attacks on electricity infrastructure, residences, businesses, schools, and hospitals have also prevented children from entering schools and rendered hospitals unusable.
