DFA returns to the Philippines 8 Filipinos defrauded in Cambodia
On Saturday, eight Filipinos who had been tricked into working for a syndicate in Cambodia that engaged in online fraud and catfishing (creating false identities) were returned to Manila, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).
According to the DFA, they were found in Oddar Meanchey and Kampot provinces and rescued by the Cambodian National Police. The Anti-Cyber Crime Unit then looked into their whereabouts before handing them over to the General Department of Immigration.
The DFA coordinated the expedited inquiry and subsequent release of the Filipinos with the Philippine Embassy in Phnom Penh and provided welfare support.
According to DFA Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs Eduardo Jose de Vega, “Human trafficking in Southeast Asia is a severe regional concern, and the DFA is exercising efforts to safeguard the safety of Filipinos wherever they are.”
To put a stop to this abominable conduct, he continued, “We will continue to work with the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) member nations and international partners.”
The DFA reiterates that customer service agent employment in Southeast Asia is “generally fake” and that foreigners cannot work in Cambodia without a legitimate work permit.
Also, the DFA cautioned people about clicking on job offers that were too good to be true.
It stated that job seekers should only submit applications through the Philippine Overseas Employment Agency or authorized recruitment firms.
