On Chinese New Year, Cebu City prohibits the use of firecrackers.
Mayor Michael Rama reminded the Filipino-Chinese community here on Monday of the existing restriction on the use of fireworks, pyrotechnics, and firecrackers during the Chinese New Year celebrations on Tuesday.
To avoid the spread of coronavirus sickness 2019, Rama stressed in his daily press conference that gathering during the ceremony commemorating the beginning of the Year of the Water Tiger is also prohibited (Covid-19).
According to him, the prohibition on gatherings does not apply to family gatherings attended by members of the same household.
The prohibitions, he claimed, are in line with his executive orders, which advise residents here to stay at home if they have nothing important to accomplish outside of their home.
The mayor appealed to the Filipino-Chinese inhabitants here “to understand our directive that may limit your customary celebration” because firecrackers had become part of their traditions on every important occasion such as their New Year.
He did, however, acknowledge the Filipino-Chinese community’s contribution to the city’s economic development.

He said the Chinese New Year is one of the Philippines’ acknowledged significant events with socio-cultural, traditional, historical, educational, and religious significance.
However, the mayor stated that, given the current Alert Level 3, it is vital to protect the public’s health and well-being, citing the recent increase of Covid-19 instances in the city.
On Sunday, the city recorded 29 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the total number of active infections to 7,423, with 312 new recoveries and two fatalities.
