Candidates for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) were reminded by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Friday that early campaigning is prohibited from July 8 to October 18, and that offenders risk severe penalties.

In an interview with reporters, Comelec chairman George Garcia stated, “We will charge you and will surely disqualify you since you have already submitted your Certificate of Candidacy (COC) and is engaging in premature campaigning, which is forbidden.

“As soon as your COC is submitted, you are automatically a candidate. As a result, we will abide by the letter and spirit of Section 18 of the Omnibus Election Code (OEC). Given that you are already a candidate, you are unable to campaign or hand out materials “Added he.

The four-day filing window will run from July 3 through July 7, 2023.

According to Garcia, filing the COC early will enable the election authority to hold individuals who engage in illicit campaigning accountable.

“Since they have previously submitted their COC and are viewed as contenders, this would be preferable. As a result, we are already able to bring cases against them. You will be disqualified and charged with electoral offenses, “declared the Comelec chief.

The election period will run from July 3 to November 14, while the campaign phase for the elections on October 30 will run from October 19 to 28.

Except during the campaign season, it is illegal to participate in an election campaign or partisan political action under the OEC.
