BOC discovers P102-M smuggled Chinese onions and sugar
At the Manila International Container Terminal, the Bureau of Customs (BOC) discovered 17 cargoes containing agricultural goods worth PHP101.6 million that had been illegally imported (MICP).
The BOC said in a statement that after a series of physical tests on Feb. 27 and 28, many containers, most of which were from China, were discovered to contain misdeclared and undeclared commodities, including red and white onions, mushroom balls, and sugar.
Three local consignees—RYY Consumer Goods Trade, MFBY Consumer Goods Trading, and M.S. Fab Builder—had their shipments intercepted by the designated Customs examiners, who discovered red and white onions, mushroom balls, and sugar.
On December 29, 2022, to February 12, the shipments arrived at the port of Manila.
“Although we haven’t finished looking through all of these possible containers, we are currently attempting to identify the source of these criminal activities. To secure our borders, our personnel are working day and night, according to Juvymax Uy, deputy commissioner for intelligence.
After receiving “derogatory information” on the containers’ contents, Director Verne Enciso of the Customs Intelligence and Investigative Service (CIIS) issued the Alert Orders.
“Initial, these shipments were listed as containing pneumatic tools, pizza dough, and shabu-shabu balls like fish balls. But thus far, we have discovered agricultural products like sugar and onions in the 22 containers we have opened this week, the man stated.
Enciso took charge of the physical inspections after receiving the report from the Customs Intelligence Group and putting the containers on hold.
“It’s imperative that we at the port take action right away on these issues because, if these containers are actually transporting agricultural products, we will need to work with other important government authorities to arrange for the necessary documentation. Here, we not only keep an eye out for illegal substances like drugs and the like, but we also safeguard our markets from the negative economic effects of smuggled agricultural products, the official stated.
