The governor of Leyte says it’s time to upgrade public transportation.

Carlos Jericho Petilla, the governor of Leyte, said on Friday that the country’s worsening traffic congestion and expanding population make it imperative to advance the public utility vehicle modernization program (PUVMP).

“The population is increasing, but the roads aren’t getting any bigger. Fewer vehicles need to be on the road. More people can fit in the updated car, according to Petilla, who spoke to reporters.

Yet, the governor has urged the federal government to find measures to lower the cost of modern automobiles for small business owners.

“Historically, some jeepney drivers have owned their vehicles. We require a facility so that everyone can possess a new jeepney under modernization, Petilla continued.

Days after a transport strike that mostly affected commuters in Metro Manila but had little impact elsewhere, the governor made the declaration.

According to the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, the PUVMP aims to create a reorganized, contemporary, effectively managed, and environmentally sustainable transportation sector where drivers and operators have secure, sufficient, and dignified livelihoods and commuters reach their destinations quickly, safely, and comfortably.
