To minimize postharvest losses, the DA is considering solar-powered cold storage

In collaboration with Next Agri Corporation Philippines Inc. and Ecofrost Technologies India, the Department of Agriculture (DA) plans to install solar-powered cold storage in food producing regions throughout the nation.

On Friday, Agriculture Secretary William Dar saw a demonstration of India’s most advanced digitally enabled modular on-farm solar-powered cold storage system.

“We applaud this creative and inclusive technology, which can be implemented everywhere in the Philippines using sustainable solar energy,” he added.

The solar-powered device will be the country’s first of its type. According to DA, there would be no extra costs for power expenditures in keeping their product, and it may be readily placed in distant locations without electricity.

“The Philippine agricultural industry, like that of other developing nations, has been hit hard by significant post-harvest losses. “Losses in high-value crops alone may easily exceed 20-40 percent,” Dar said.

Due to a lack of cold storage facilities, farmers on rural and isolated islands have been unable to preserve their product, forcing them to sell at cheaper rates to intermediaries and loan sharks, sometimes receiving less than half of their real worth.

This endeavor will also address the growing dangers of climate change and the occurrence of natural catastrophes such as typhoons, floods, and droughts, which are aggravating small farmers’ postharvest difficulties.

When natural catastrophes like as typhoons, floods, and droughts strike, the on-site cold storage facilities will assist to create resilient Filipino agricultural communities by minimizing food and revenue losses.

Appropriate on-site cold storage facilities may also help preserve farmers’ product, increase their revenue, ensure food security, and boost our country’s export competitiveness.

The difficulty, according to Dar, is to make the facility cheap and sustainable, as well as to provide after-sales support, which should be a requirement for all agri-fishery equipment makers, distributors, and service providers.

Next Agri Corporation Philippines Inc. and Ecofrost Technologies India specialize in developing sustainable postharvest technologies that help food farmers optimize output and profit by preventing losses and waste.
