Women’s Month in Pasig Village includes a free cancer screening

A barangay in Pasig City gave its female citizens a gift on Friday by offering free breast and cervical cancer screenings in honor of Women’s Month.

Barangay San Antonio (BSA) in Pasig City teamed up with the Philippine Cancer Society (PCS) and the Rotary Club of Makati-West (Rotary Makati-West) to offer free breast and cervical cancer screenings in an effort to safeguard women there from two of the most prevalent cancers in the country.

The importance of early cancer detection and diagnosis was emphasized by Dr. Romeo Marcaida, director of the PCS program and coordinator of the outreach initiative.

“Just around 64% of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer survive, which is a worrying statistic. On the other hand, more than 7,000 cases of cervical cancer are detected each year, and it’s more scarier because only 50% of patients survive, “added he.

He continued, “We’re screening, which is preventative. “Early detection is what we’re after. Early detection makes it much simpler to treat.

Raymond Lising, the chairman of the BSA, expressed gratitude to their partners for offering their services without charge.

The terrible reality for Filipinas, according to Lising, is that many of them are unaware of the value of early breast and cervical cancer screening and detection while others are knowledgeable but unable to pay for these tests.

The biggest gift they can provide to female citizens during Women’s Month, according to him, is the gift of early screening and detection. The event, which he said was the first of its type in their barrio, was made possible, he added, by the PCS and Rotary Makati-West.

Although impacting a sizable portion of Filipinas, many continue to forego breast and cervical cancer screenings, only to discover their ailment after it is too late, according to Preventive Medicine Reports, a publication released in October 2022.

BSA resident and Rotary Makati-West member Jan Antonio Campos expressed his joy at being a part of the outreach effort for making early screening and detection available to fellow neighbors.

“80 to 100 ladies were the initial target audience for the mobile van that we offered for screening. We were surprised to find that we could persuade 120 ladies to be tested “Campos” said.

Marcaida added that private clinics and hospitals charge thousands of pesos for breast and cervical cancer screenings.

“The ultrasound is free of charge. Moreover, ultrasound costs PHP 2,000 in private hospitals. We’re providing it without charge,” he stated.

Despite all of these tests, he highlighted that screening will always be less expensive than therapy and said that there is little likelihood of survival for cancer in its late stages.

“Up to 20% of late-stage patients have very low survival rates. 60 to 80 percent if you are in the early stages, though. Thus, screening is crucial “Noted him. “Don’t be terrified since the key to surviving and fighting against cancer is prevention and early detection.”

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, with an estimated 2.3 million new cases and 685,000 fatalities in 2020, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women, with an estimated 604,000 new cases and 341,000 fatalities in the same year.

Both types of cancer continue to be a major public health concern in Asia, with wide regional and national variations in incidence, mortality, and risk factors.

The objectives of Republic Act 6949, series of 1990, and Presidential Proclamation 227, series of 1988 are to recognize the contributions of Filipino women to our society and to observe March as Women’s Role in History Month and National Women’s Day, respectively.
