Solon and the labor movement support the proposed P150 general wage increase.

Since the nation struggles with a high inflation rate, Senator Ramon Revilla Jr. stated on Monday that the planned nationwide PHP150 across-the-board salary hike will soon be approved.

Revilla claimed that Senate Bill No. 2002, also known as Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri’s planned Across-the-Board Pay Raise Act of 2023, is making progress in both Houses of Congress, with no less than the Senate leadership assisting in its approval.

Our ability to make a living salary is crucial. Inaasam ng ating mga manggagawa matagal na itong (Our wokers have long been waiting for this). I’m hopeful,” Revilla declared in a statement.

The Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) recently declared its support for Zubiri’s proposed legislation.

The Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) expressed support for Senate Bill No. 2002, introduced by Senate President Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri, which seeks a PHP 150 nationwide raise in the minimum wage for employees in the private sector.

“We appreciate these numerous measures to raise salaries of workers since these numerous suggestions, notably those led by the Senate President, highlight the urgent need for wage adjustment in light of the erosion of the purchasing power of workers’ incomes owing to inflation,” it continued.

Zubiri responded to worries from the business community that the wage increase would compel owners of businesses to close or fire staff by stating that failure to raise pay would result in workers leaving the nation in search of employment.

Itaas natin ang sweldo ng mga manggagawa o panoorin natin silang mangibang-bansa para sa mas magandang kita (we boost the wages of workers or watch them leave the country in search of higher income),” Zubiri remarked.

While acknowledging the need for a wage increase in light of the high cost of fuel and food and the fact that workers’ daily take-home pay is insufficient to meet their families needs, Senator Jinggoy Estrada also stressed the importance of striking a balance between the needs of workers and their employers, who also suffered from the pandemic’s effects.

Micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), which make up more than 95% of all businesses in the nation, are the foundation of the Filipino economy, according to Estrada.

The majority of our workers still lack job security, which is a more pressing concern than wage increases. Hence, in order to secure employment creation and maintenance, it is necessary to strike a balance between workers’ requirements and businesses’ capability, he added, adding that strategies to support both the workers’ and employers’ sectors should also be explored with the tripartite sectors.
