Calls for stability and security in the Indo-Pacific region have received strong support from both the Philippines and the UK.

This happened after Laure Beaufils, the UK ambassador to Manila, paid Lt. Gen. Arthur Cordura, the vice chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), a courtesy visit on Tuesday at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City.

According to a statement from the head of the AFP public affairs office, Col. Jorry Baclor, “during their discussion, Ambassador Beaufils and the VCSAFP (Vice Chief of Staff AFP) discussed subjects of mutual importance, including regional stability and international maritime law.

The two representatives reaffirmed Manila’s and London’s security cooperation.

He stated, “They welcomed potential future security engagements between the Philippines and the UK and highlighted the value of sustained security and military cooperation.

The gathering is a component of the AFP’s global initiatives in military and security.

In the context of a rules-based system and international law, “they also discussed and backed each other’s measures to maintain peace and security in the Indo-Pacific area,” Baclor said.

The recent announcements of the Australia-UK-US submarine program and the UK-Japan-Italy fighter aircraft development cooperation were among the recent changes in the UK’s foreign and security policies in the Indo-Pacific region that Beaufils relayed.

She continued by saying that these are a part of the UK’s long-term investment in the area, along with the continued stationing of Navy warships there.

Cordura also expressed the appreciation of the AFP to the UK for helping to strengthen its capabilities through training and high-level exchanges.

The AFP was open to future multilateral collaborations with the UK and other partners that would advance shared interests, he added, and he acknowledged the continuous intelligence information sharing, according to Baclor.
