Rice worth 10,000 bags is given to Mindanao by South Korea.

Following the flash floods and landslides that struck the region in December 2022, the Korean government contributed 10,000 bags (or roughly 400 metric tonnes) of rice on Tuesday to support rehabilitation operations in Mindanao.

10,000 sacks of milled rice were ceremoniously turned over under the APTERR Tier 3 Program by the Korean ambassador to the Philippines, Kim In-Chul.

10,000 families in the Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, and Davao regions—which were the most severely affected when heavy rains and flash floods hit in the final quarter of 2022—will get the rice.

During the changeover in El Salvador town, Misamis Oriental province, Kim said, “I am very pleased to hand over the 400 MT of rice to the Philippines through the APTERR program, and I hope that these sacks of rice will give the affected people renewed hope and strength.”

The representative also reaffirmed Seoul’s dedication to the APTERR program, of which South Korea is the largest contributor with a total donation to the other countries’ members of 19,000 MT of rice under tier 3.

2,750 MT of rice has been shipped from Korea to the Philippines as part of the program since 2017.

The Philippine government’s thanks were expressed by Roderico Bioco, administrator of the National Food Authority, who was present at the occasion. He called the donation an “immeasurable” gift to the devastated community as they make their way toward recovery and rehabilitation.

The Korean Embassy, meanwhile, emphasized that the Philippines’ development partnership with Korea continues to place a high focus on humanitarian aid.

To date, South Korea has committed a total of USD 517 million to help vulnerable communities around the nation better prepare for disasters and provide humanitarian aid in times of need.

This help consists of almost USD 2 million in post-Super Typhoon Odette (Rai) disaster assistance as well as the purchase of 500,000 doses of coronavirus illness 2019 and 34 refrigerated trucks as well as four service vans for Manila’s pandemic response.
