Legarda: Communities affected by the oil spill need more assistance.

On Friday, Senate Pro Tempore Loren Legarda requested additional help for the locals impacted by the recent oil disaster in Oriental Mindoro, which has affected a number of provinces in Mimaropa and Western Visayas.

It is crucial that your province receive aid first, and I’ll keep pushing for the support that those who were harmed by the oil spill need, Legarda said.

In order to assist the impacted areas, Legarda’s office collaborated with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). As a result, 500 fishermen each received PHP2,000 in aid through the AICS programme.

Additionally, 2,000 food packets were delivered to the impacted households in the municipality of Pola.

Legarda declared, “This payout will undoubtedly bring joy despite their struggle and shows that they are not being forgotten by the government.” “Ang payout na ito ay tiyak na magdadala ng saya sa kabila ng nararanasang kahirapan,” she added.

The seasoned senator met with Secretary Rex Gatchalian to address the additional help required and commended DSWD and the local governments of the province of Oriental Mindoro for their prompt reaction to the afflicted residents.

The aforementioned group of supporters is patuloy nating tulungan at suportahan sa pamamagitan ng napakagandang programang ito. We will continue to assist and support our people through this excellent programme. Palagi nating unahin ang mahalagang layunin ng AICS programme na magbigay ng support system para sa ating mga kapwa Pilipino sa panahon ng krisis at kahirapan. We will never lose sight of the crucial goal of the AICS program, which is to provide a support network for our compatriots in need during times of hardship, according to Legarda.

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) of Oriental Mindoro has identified more municipalities that are affected by the oil spill in addition to Pola, including Naujan, Bongabong, Pinamalayan, Roxas, Gloria, Bansud, Mansalay, Bulalacao, and Calapan City.

After hearing about the oil spill, Legarda immediately coordinated with the relevant organisations to get updates on the conditions in the affected areas, including her home province of Antique, where she worked with Antique Representative Antonio Agapito “AA” Legarda Jr. to give 570 families cash assistance through the DSWD’s AICS program, amounting to PHP3,000 per household.

On March 10, Legarda requested that the relevant Senate committees immediately conduct an investigation into the effects of the oil spill on the environment, public health, and tourism with the assistance of all government agencies. She then filed Senate Resolution No. 540 directing the relevant committee to carry out the investigation.
