The palace will observe Earth Hour, and Marcos invites Filipinos to take part
Filipinos were urged to join the fight against climate change and take part in the 2023 Earth Hour on Saturday night by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.
In a statement, Marcos said Malacanang would participate in Earth Hour, a worldwide campaign that calls on companies and communities to turn down all unnecessary electric lights for one hour between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. as a sign of support for the environment.
The President stated in a video message that the Philippines is “one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change” due to the average of 20 typhoons it experiences a year.
The world is preparing for the irreversible effects of climate change as Earth’s temperature rises and the global carbon footprint reaches a new all-time high of 36.8 gigatons in 2022, he added.
The Chief Executive remarked that by doing so, people are “giving Mother Nature 60 minutes to breathe,” adding that it only takes 60 minutes to do good for our future, 60 minutes to take attention and commit to rescuing Mother Nature, to be unified and take action.
The World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour gives people the chance to contribute to initiatives to lessen the catastrophic effects of climate change.
One of its goals is to start a discussion about the climate issue, especially the shocking loss of biodiversity and the natural world.
According to Marcos, participating in Earth Hour will also assist the government enact policies that will benefit the environment.
So let’s take a moment right now to pause, slow down, and give the Earth a chance to breathe and recover. May this joint action serve as a reminder to all that protecting the environment is a responsibility that spans generations and that it should be our top concern as a society if we are to advance and develop.
“Let us take action to help protect and preserve the Earth, our only home, by starting programs, campaigns, and advocacy efforts.”
This year, the Marcos administration has set aside PHP464.5 billion, or 8.8% of the overall national budget, to address climate change.
According to the Department of Budget and Management (DBM), this is a considerable increase of 60.1% over the allocated PHP289.7 billion for 2022.
Amenah Pangandaman, the budget secretary, said in a separate statement, “As we participate in this worthwhile endeavor, I encourage everyone to do our share, whether be it big or small, to help prevent ecological degradation and disasters by adopting climate change mitigation and resilience programs, switching to renewable energy, maintaining low greenhouse emissions, and many more.”
She stated that the DBM would work to put programs and initiatives that incorporate environmentally friendly standards into place, like institutionalizing “sustainable/green public procurement,” which facilitates the purchase of products and services with minimal negative environmental effects.
