Ukraine expects that China will play a “more important” role in bringing the war to a close.

ANKARA, Turkey β€” According to a senior Ukrainian official, his country expects that China, as a major global player, will play a larger role in ending the conflict with Russia.

On his Twitter account, Andriy Yermak, the head of Ukraine’s President’s Office, wrote, “Kyiv is hoping that Beijing would play a more prominent role in bringing this war to a stop.”

“We are looking forward to the meeting between (Ukrainian President) Volodymyr Zelenskyy and (Chinese President) Xi Jinping,” he said, adding that the world’s leading countries, including China, should agree on deterring Russia.

Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine’s foreign minister, said on Monday that China should be involved in the war’s resolution process, and Wang Wenbin, a spokesman for China’s foreign ministry, responded the same day, saying that the conflicting countries should maintain contact and resolve the issue through diplomacy.

The war between Russia and Ukraine, which began on February 24, has sparked international indignation, with the European Union, the United States, and the United Kingdom, among others, imposing strong financial penalties on Moscow.

Peace discussions are difficult, but they are progressing.

Ukraine’s president said early Wednesday that talks with Russia to settle the conflict are challenging but progressing slowly.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the latest developments in the fighting, negotiations, and evacuations in a video message on his Telegram account.

“Ukrainian negotiators are working on the talks, which are going on almost every day.” It’s challenging, and occasionally scandalous. But, little by little, we’re making progress,” Zelenskyy remarked.

He stated that talks with Russia were ongoing at various levels in order to put an end to the cruel war, which has resulted in the deaths of thousands of people and the displacement of millions.

According to Zelenskyy, about 100,000 people are stranded in the besieged city of Mariupol, where they are forced to live in horrific conditions without food, water, or medicine. Around 7,000 others have been evacuated, but the process has been delayed by Russian forces.

“Our representatives are attempting to reach an agreement on humanitarian corridors in the Kyiv, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Luhansk regions,” he said, adding that additional evacuations in Mariupol would take place on Wednesday.

According to a UN tally, at least 953 people have been killed and 1,557 injured during the battle.

The true toll, though, is “considerably higher,” according to the international agency.

The Ukrainian military reported on Wednesday that 15,600 Russian servicemen have died in Ukraine since the conflict began.

According to the Ukrainian General Staff, Ukrainian forces have also destroyed 101 Russian aircraft, 124 helicopters, 517 tanks, 1,578 armored carriers, 267 guns, 80 rocket launcher systems, and 47 air defense systems since February 24.

According to the report, Russian forces reportedly lost 1,008 vehicles, four light speedboats, 70 fuel vehicles, and 42 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

According to the UN refugee agency, more than 3.5 million people have fled Ukraine as a result of Russian attacks.
