The new peace and order council chair in Eastern Visayas is Romualdez

The appointment of Tacloban Mayor Alfred Romualdez as the new head of the Regional Peace and Order Council (RPOC) was warmly embraced by local government leaders in Eastern Visayas.

Romualdez has experience leading the council and coordinating efforts to bring about enduring peace in the region, according to Ormoc City Mayor Lucy Torres-Gomez, Chair of the Regional Development Council, and Northern Samar Governor Edwin Ongchuan.

Romualdez, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s cousin, took over for Eastern Samar Governor Ben Evardone, who served as RPOC chairman from 2019 to 2022. A memo from the Department of the Interior and Local Government dated March 13, 2023, provided confirmation of this.

“To advance the area, we all depend on one another. The foundation of all progress is peace and order, making this committee incredibly significant. Gomez stated in a statement on Monday that without that, there couldn’t possibly be any true advancement.

She said she will soon meet with the local mayor to discuss a prospective collaboration that would boost economic development in the region.

Romualdez, according to Ongchuan, would help the council collaborate effectively with stakeholders and local and national organizations.

With Mayor Alfred’s strong leadership and the coordinated efforts of the local government units and regional line agencies, Ongchuan continued, “Eastern Visayas is performing well in achieving its target outcomes in maintaining the peace and order in the region, and now we believe that we can finally achieve just and lasting peace.”

Romualdez had earlier stated that he would work to have a meeting with all the interested parties to evaluate prior measures taken to solve the region’s security and peace situation.

Romualdez stated, “My plan is to touch base with all the stakeholders, all the members of the regional peace and order council, touch base with them so that we can now give an update on the most recent situation, as well as we review the past policies to see how effective they were and if they need to be extended or modified.”

He continued by saying that he intended to visit different local governments to speak with officials there and assess the state of law and order there at the moment.

Making plans and recommending actions to improve or enhance public safety and peace and order in their different spheres of responsibility are among the duties of the RPOC.

The agency is also entrusted with overseeing the operation of volunteer civilian self-defense groups, as well as other counter-insurgency initiatives, projects, and programs at the provincial, city, and municipal levels.

Additionally, they must regularly examine the state of peace and order in their particular regions of responsibility and report back to the chairman of the National Peace and Order Council with recommendations.
