Additional vaccinations are planned to stop the outbreak.

The goal of the 2023 Measles, Rubella, Oral-bivalent Polio Vaccine Supplemental Immunization Activity (MR OPV SIA), which will take place in May of this year, is to avoid the emergence of diseases that can be prevented by vaccination.

The SIA in 2014, 2017, and 2018 was a response to the outbreak and low immunization coverage, according to Dr. Jose Martin Atienza, Regional Immunization Program Coordinator of the Department of Health Western Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH WV CHD), who stated this on Monday.

2014 saw a decrease in the national immunization rate from 82.41 percent coverage in 2013 to 73.96 percent in 2014.

In 2022, it will have decreased to 59.52 percent from 68.54 percent in 2016 to 66.32 percent in 2017, 63.15 percent in 2018, and 59.52 percent in 2019.

In a virtual press conference, he stated, “This 2023 is different knowing that we will be conducting the supplemental immunization activity prior to the occurrence of an outbreak in order to have averted or stopped an impending outbreak.”

In contrast to this year, when there was just one incidence of each disease, Western Visayas will have three laboratory-confirmed cases of rubella and two of measles in 2022.

The SIA aims to reach 660 054 eligible 9 to 59-month-old children in the region for the measles-rubella vaccine and 769 881 eligible 0 to 59-month-old children for the bivalent OPV.

“The national vaccination program’s objective is to increase the percentage of eligible children who are fully immunized to up to 95%. In order to eventually attain herd immunity, this will boost children’s resistance to illnesses that can be prevented by vaccination.

The immunization program, which will begin in May, will also be carried out through house-to-house visits and temporary locations like community centers.

Atienza reassured that immunization is one approach to prevent the sickness from spreading to kids, especially to unvaccinated kids who are more likely to get infections that are preventable by immunization.

“Our vaccine continues to be the safest, most affordable, and most effective means to combat the epidemic we are currently facing. He said that vaccinations consistently save lives.
