In Palawan town, there have been 96 cases of HFMD.
Tuesday, a provincial lawmaker requested the Provincial Health Office (PHO) to take immediate action to stop the spread of the hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) that has been recorded in many Roxas town villages.
Ma. is a provincial board member. During the Sangguniang Panlalawigan regular session, Angela Sabando reported that she had received a report from a Roxas local government unit nurse stating that the town had tallied nearly 100 cases.
She claimed that according to the data, Barangay Magara had the most cases—54—followed by Barangay Nicanor Zabala, with 22, San Jose, with 5, Barangay IV, with 4, Barangay New Barbacan, with 2, and Barangays I, III, Caramay, and Tinitian, with each having one case.
According to Sabando, there were six instances for children aged 0 to 11 months, 31 cases for children aged 4 to 5, 41 cases for children aged 5 to 9, and 18 cases for children aged 10 to 14.
In her privilege speech, Sabando stated that out of 96 cases of HFMD, 57 cases are male and 39 cases are female.
Sabando stated that she is requesting that the Department of Health (DOH), through the PHO and the Department of Education, launch a significant information and education (IEC) campaign about the illness in schools not only in Roxas but also in other municipalities of the province in light of the sudden increase in HFMD cases.
“I discovered that this illness, which initially only affected one child from Nicanor Zabala and has since infected nearly 100 people, is incredibly contagious. Although this is self-healing and there is no known cure as of now, the difficulties the children will face could cause consequences. Therefore, we must take fast action before it spreads to other areas, she continued.
While HFMD is not a serious condition, if the patient is not given prompt, appropriate treatment, it could result in dehydration, according to Dr. Justyne Barbosa, Medical Specialist II at the PHO.
However, she continued, “here in the province of Palawan, we have not yet had a documented mortality because cases are promptly treated.
