Pope: Meritocracy shouldn’t make inequality worse.

Inequality shouldn’t get worse because of meritocracy, the pope declared on Monday.

As he addressed the attendees of the “Minerva Dialogues” gathering sponsored by the Dicastery for Culture and Education the audience at the Vatican, he observed, “This problem of inequality might be compounded by a false vision of meritocracy that undermines the notion of human dignity.”

“The acknowledgment and reward of achievement and human endeavor have a solid foundation, but there is a risk of considering the economic advantage of a select few to be earned or deserving while demonizing the poverty of many in a specific way.”
